OUR LAST SUNDAY OF YEAR 2020 - UNDER A TREE (REMNANT - YENGA, UGENYA)

Under a Tree, Full of Faith: Capturing Our Last Sunday of 2020 in Yenga, Ugenya

By Coach Davie

As 2020 drew to a close, I found myself in Yenga, Ugenya—standing under a massive tree with a group of believers who had gathered for one reason: to worship God.

No walls. No roof. Just faith.

I had to take out my phone. Not for content, not for show—but to capture the memory. To document what God was doing right here, in the rural heart of Western Kenya.

🙏 A Church Without a Building, But Full of Power

This wasn’t just another Sunday. It was the last service of the year, and we were out in the open because the church didn’t have a physical sanctuary yet. But you wouldn’t have known it from the spirit in the place.

The young came. The elderly came. No one complained.

They sat under the sun and shade with Bibles in hand and songs in their hearts. The sound of worship echoed off the fields. People weren’t distracted by the setting—they were completely focused on God.

That’s what struck me most: resilience. Quiet, unshakable, and real.

💪 Pastor Harun Okoth: Leading with Vision

At the front stood Senior Pastor Harun Okoth, a man who refused to let lack define the ministry. His optimism was contagious. You could see he wasn’t just holding services—he was building something.

He spoke with vision, not frustration. And as I filmed parts of the service, I realized: this was leadership in its rawest form. Faith on the frontlines. The kind that doesn't just preach hope but pulls hope up from the soil.

🔥 I Had to Record This

I wanted people to see this. To see the beauty of worship when it’s stripped of everything except what truly matters.

  • No fancy sound systems.

  • No stage lights.

  • No sanctuary—yet.

But the Spirit of God? Fully present.

I recorded so others could feel what I was feeling in that moment: the conviction, the hunger, the joy.

🌾 Worship, Simplicity, and Strength

After the service, there was a shared meal. Mandazi, some fruit, chai. But the deeper meal had already been served—in the Word, in prayer, in unity.

This was church as it was meant to be: alive, hopeful, and unstoppable.

✨ What This Day Meant to Me

  1. I witnessed worship in its purest form.

  2. I saw what it means to trust God for more—even when you don’t have much.

  3. I watched a community anchored in faith, not facilities.

  4. And I captured a moment I never want to forget.

📝 My Final Thought

That Sunday, under a tree in Yenga, reminded me why I pick up my phone—not to scroll, but to tell stories that matter.

And this one matters:
A small rural church, led by a visionary pastor, full of believers who gather with no complaints, under open skies, trusting God for a sanctuary.

They may not have their building yet, but I promise you—they already have a church.

And one day, when that sanctuary stands tall, we’ll look back at these videos and say:
“This is where it started. Under a tree. Full of faith.”
